| The
“anchor base” of Naval Base Coronadi (NBC) is Naval Air Station North
Island, known as "The Birthplace of
Naval Aviation". Officially designated as the Navy's first Naval
Air Station in 1917, the first Navy pilot, Lt. Gene Ellyson, trained at
North Island under the tutorship of Glenn Curtiss in 1911 and the
tradition of training pilots has continued ever since. After an eastward leg, the channel enters a turning basin area before heading toward the center spans of the San Diego/Coronado Bridge. Bordering on this turning basin are the Embarcadero with its Cruise Ship Terminal and adjacent to the Naval Supply pier. Across the channel and turning basin area are the Naval aircraft carrier berths on Naval Air Station, North Island Naval Air Station North Island (NAS North Island), located at the north end of the Silver Strand in San Diego Bay, is the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. It is part of Naval Base Coronado. NAS North Island operates two other airfields in Southern California: Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility (NALF) San Clemente Island, located 70 miles northwest of San Diego in the Channel Islands; and Outlying Field (OLF) Imperial Beach, located 10 miles south of the base on the U.S.-Mexican border. ![]() Naval Base Coronado (NBC) is a consolidated Navy installation compassing seven military facilities stretching from San Clemente Island, located seventy miles west of San Diego, to the La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Facility, located sixty miles east of San Diego. Organization: In 1997, Naval Base Coronado was created, incorporating seven separate Naval installations under one Commanding Officer. Those facilities include: Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI); Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (NAB); Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach (OLFIB); Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island (SCI); Silver Strand Training Complex (SSTC), formerly known as the Naval Radio Receiving Facility; Mountain Warfare Training Facility La Posta (MWTF); and the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Facility, Warner Springs (SERE).
