Back in 2003, MARAD sent 4 ships  to England for Recycling.

They were sent because there was not enough locations for Recycling in the U.S.  The ships are STILL MOORED off
the Seal Sands on Tees Channel, the area shown below.

The 4 MARAD SHIPS moored here are;
USS Caloosahatchee (AO-98)USS Canistoe (AO-99);

USS Compass Island (E-AG-153), and USS Canopus (AS-34)

The UK government had said the Caloosahatchee and a sister ship could be stored temporarily on Teesside,
but should be sent back to the U.S. That was back in 2003.

The United States is now recycling the retired ships at a fast pace in,
Amelia, Louisiana; Brownsville, Texas; and New Orleans, Louisiana.

The intent, by  Able Recycle, has been to treat the  water area within the yellow area as a dry dock.
