8 August, 1990; Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), Ticonderoga (CG-47), Scott (DDG-995), John L. Hall (FFG-32), Neosho (AO-143) and Suribachi (AE-21) transited the Suez Canal, southbound. As some of the first coalition forces to arrive in the area, the ships formed the Red Sea Battle Group, maintaining station in that sea to defend Saudi Arabia should Hussein chose to continue his aggression.

The head office of the Suez Canal Authority is located in Ismaïlia

Navigation in the Suez Canal is around the clock.
* The Canal has no locks and operates day and night.
* The Canal is a single lane Canal. Interspersed with four passing points.
* Ships transit the Canal, in Convoys. There are three convoys daily:
from Port Said: 0100
from Port Said: 0700
from Suez : 0600

Navigation Pilots probably live in Ismailia so change of pilots occur there.
