Change of Command - 28 November 1965

Captain C.S. Tanner is relieved by Captain M.J. Carpenter on the O1 deck

The last final weeks prior to a ship getting underway for the Western Pacific are filled with the ceremony, the hectic scrambles, and the last minute jobs so much a part of pre-departure preparations. Captain C.S. Tanner, after serving more than a year as the ships's Commanding Officer, was relieved on 28 November 1965 by Captain M.J. Carpenter.  In addition to the familes of the new and old Commanding Officers, and ship's company, Commodore Walker, ComServRon Five was also present for the ceremonies.  It was only three days later that USS KAWISHIWI under Captain Carpenter was bound for the Seventh Fleet.
