The last final weeks prior to a ship geeting underway for the Western Pacific are simultaneously filled with the ceremony, the hectic scrambles, and last minute jobs so much a part of pre-departure prepar- ations. A change of command, arrival of new personnel, a flurry of paper work, stocking the ship with stores and provisions, and of course the happiness of Christmas and the sadness of farewell were all included in December 1963 as as Kawishiwi made herself ready in all respects to serve with the mighty Seventh Fleet of the Western Pacific. Following the Change-of-Command all hands were inspected by the new
commanding officer before the ship deployed to WESTPAC. Sporting a new coat of paint, topped off with fuel for the fleet, and looking like a lady, Kawishiwi sat along side Hotel Pier during the last days of December and the Christmas Holidays. For the months to come there is work to do.
