USS Kawishiwi AO-146 - MASCOT's Yokusan and Tangora

Navy's Only "Super-Chief"

Voyage of the
Lehi IV
.....................................
On 5 July 1958, Capt. De Vere Baker, his three-man crew, and a dog (Tangora) set out from Redondo Beach, California, on the raft Lehi IV in Baker's fourth attempt in 10 years to prove that the Pacific Islands probably were settled by people who drifted there from surrounding continents on crafts similar to Lehi IV , a single-sailed vessel measuring 18 by 24 feet. Sixty-nine days later, they have survived a violent storm and are picked up by a Japanese fishing boat off the Hawaiian island Maui and towed into Lahaina. The dog lived aboard the USS Kawishiwi for a year.

Pictured above and below is Yokusan, a mascot of the USS Kawishiwi (AO-146) and her owner, Jackson, SH1.  Yokusan is a thoroughbred Boxer and is 16 (dog years) old. She has been in the Navy for two years and her present rate is "Ships Serviceman Super-Chief".
However she is no different than anyone else and is subject to court martial. she has been busted several times but has managed to stay in line and attain the rate she now holds. Yokusan has been issued an Identification Card from Washington, D.C. which enables her to go aboard any Naval installation in the world.
The Kawishiwi is presently in Pearl Harbor, her home port.  During their stay in the Long Beach Harbor, Yokusan's duties consisted of accompanying the guard mail carrier to and from the ship.
