was dedicated to Dennis

This is a photo of Dennis, relaxing between Unrep's.

<>Dennis was called a Butterfly boy because he chased more than one girl at a time. On the day he became missing, he was restricted to the ship for disciplinary reasons.  He left the ship without authority.  He tried to swim the Olongapo River as he apparently did not have the uniform or identification to pass through the gates.  The MAA would have took his ID when he was restricted to the ship.  He was going to see his girlfriend in town.  He drowned in the river.  A memorial service was held aboard ship.

Although Dennis's rate was Fireman Apprentice, he worked with 9 other men in E Division.
they were responsible for all ship's generators, the main and emergency switch boards, all light and power, and the gyro compass. E division also has cognizance of the degaussing equipment, all the inter-communications equipment and telephone circuits, the steering motors (electrical), and the electrical shop.

Ship's crew was also trained to pick up Apollo Craft when they splashed down in the Pacific. When the first steps were made on the moon, Kawishiwi had Dennis in the western pacific ready to assist. Kawishiwi was there to assist splash down of Apollo's 13 and 15 in 1970 and 1971.

This Webmaster has officer contacts of that time who advised him of these facts.
There was NO FOUL PLAY.
Vern was in Subic Bay in 1983 and had occasion to view this river.
The river was black and would be hard for anyone to swim in.
