| About a year and a
half
after entering the Navy I made it to my first ship. It was the
USS
Kawishiwi AO-146. I had to fly to Subic Bay to catch
her. She had been out picking up evacuees from the fall of
Saigon.
I missed that by about a week. When getting back to Pearl Harbor
my new wife joined me. We had gotten married just before I went
to
Subic Bay. I had extended my tour to 3 years from 2 years.
That was OK even though I was starting to go rock happy.
After 2 years on the Kawishiwi the Navy did away with my equipment on board her. In fact they sent her to the shipyards for an overhaul where they made her into a USNS type ship. That's one owned by the Navy but has mostly civilian crew. No guns. What I did was work on the radar and computers that aimed the ships guns. |
