It was an interesting adventure for me to locate Kawishiwi when I received my orders in October of 1969.  I flew out of Travis AFB to Guam.  From Guam to the airfield in Da Nang where I spent two days.

I was then helicoptered out to USS Hancock to be transferred during an unrep to Kawishiwi.
Here is my boarding pass

I spent a night on Hancock that did not unrep with Kawishiwi so I was catapulted off of Hancock (what an experience!) on a mail plane back to the airfield at Da Nang.  I spent another night in Da Nang, ran into a classmate I graduated with from Auburn High School and we drank a few beers together at the club on the base

Here is some of my MPC used in Da Nang

The Military Payment Certificate (MPC) is the only currency that was allowed to be used
by military personnel on the bases in VietNam.
I found it in a folder I kept with all of the different money collected while over seas.

.

The next day I flew from Da Nang to Subic Bay on an old four propeller Constellation that felt like it was going to fall apart in flight because the weather was so rough.  Kawishiwi was in port at Subic Bay so I finally boarded my new ship.  I never figured out why I wasn't flown to Subic Bay in the first place, where I just could have waited for Kawishiwi to arrive.

Robert's mother pulled out NINE LETTERS she had saved from the ships Commanders.
She had received them while Robert was on the Kawishiwi. Read them at links below.
