The Bow we saw below in August is not the original structure. See how she appeared below in 1954. The gunmounts and anchor handleing area behind them where open to the sea. During high seas, these open areas could be engulfed with water and even make the ship dip lower. Several changes where made, the gun mounts were removed, the anchor room was enclosed with a mooring line room forward of it, and a very important room just under the flight deck was created, an emergency command center in case of the island bridge was out of commission.
