Served aboard the USS Kawishiwi AO146.
straight out of Boot camp from
January 1973 to October 1975
(Boot in 1st Division left as a BM3 1st Div)

We participated in Operation Frequent Wind
and Eagle Pull

Phil boarded the Kawishiwi from boot camp with two others, Terry Brooks from OK and Tomas E. McLamb.

McLamb was a CWO3, (QM) ships bosn' from 1974 to 1976. After that he was a recruiter in Hawaii. He was my bosn once again on the Peleliu and when I was a tugmaster in Long Beach. He retired and the last I knew of him, he lived in Hemet CA. The reason for the history is that he took hundreds of pictures when we on WestPac in 75. I guess we didn't do a cruise book.

I was on board working the span wire when we hit the Hancock. We also almost rammed a commercial tanker while refueling the Kitty Hawk. The QM that was driving when we hit the Hancock was bumped to deck. I read the Hancock account and I don't know a Capt. other than Capt. Hogan and the XO being on the bridge. Who cares? I was the sea and anchor detail helmsman as well as running the Bosn locker and sail loft during Capt. Hogan's tenure. In retrospect AO-146 made me grow up. She holds a special place in my heart.
