I was transfered from the Newport R.I. Underwater Ordanance Station to the pre-com school at Norfolk Va. in spring of 1955. Worked on outfitting and supplying the Kawishiwi until it "finally" got underway for Long Beach arriving there in December of 1955. I was
the ET3 on board, made 2nd class
in '56, and worked under Bernard Brady ET1 who made ETC in either late
1956 or early 1957. I did not see his name on the Plank owners
roster.
We also had a seaman in the gang whose name was Willis. I was
transfered
to the OGU at Long Beach in Feb of 1957 and returned to civilian life. A note on Cuba: We have been
going to Vieques for the past several years to visit friends who have a
winter home there. The eastern end of the island is still
closed due to possibility of unexploded ordinance that may be
there. Some of the beaches have re-opened inside what was USN
boundaries. We were there the week that they ended the
bombardments. Actually saw the ships transiting from "Rosie
Roads". The next year, there were still those who were crying
that the Navy left the Roads.
Our friends are both in the CG Auxiliary and he
is a WWII Navy Vet. They belong to the Navy League which was very
active in Vieques. Many of the residents are Navy
Vets. Since the Navy left they have taken the Coast Guard unit
[still there on PR] under their wings.
We are looking forward to visiting again in
February, our wives have this thing going about getting together
for Valentines Day. Guess I'll just have to go along. Tough
duty but somebody has to do it. Dick - 11-2-2006
