Gemini Recovery Program

We were posted outside the target area in case they missed. Iwas a volunteer swimmer and got some training in a Pearl Harbor swimming pool to learn how to attach the flotation collar around the craft just in case. We also had a doctor put on board for the mission. The ship rehearsed picking a dummy capsule out of the water. There are some pictures in the cruise album of this. I'm sure it was a carrier that got the capsule. The Cochrane and Renshaw were the two destroyers who along with us formed our recovery group.

Since I live in Orange County it would be wonderful to have our old ship resting as a reef nearby. I would be very interested in volunteering to assist in preparing her in the Bay Area, but especially in Southern Cal.

August 8, 2011: Answer to thought that Kawishiwi were Dry Docked in Vallejo.
"I want to be involved whether it is in Vallejo or Long Beach. Obviously Long Beach would be more convenient (I live in Orange County), but I could make it up for as many weekends as I could if it is in Nor Cal. How many weekends do you estimate would be needed to get the job done?"
