Al provided
his cruise
book from our 1969-70 Westpac cruise, he was editor of it. It has
a white cover with a big red "K" like the cereal Special K.
E:mail
notes:
I just read
the
Thompson letters and even saw my name in a couple of them--Dec. '69 and
Oct. '70. They bring back a lot of memories , events and faces of
men that I haven't thought about in thirty years. MPA-Main Propulsion
Assistant-reported
on board in Apr. '68 as a brand new Ensign in charge of "B" and "M"
Divisions.
Also served as the Auxiliaries Officer ("A" and "E" Divisions) and
briefly
the Chief Engineer. Left the ship in Nov. '70 as a LTjg, selected
for LT (if I would extend-and go to a Fleet Tug as XO-which I
respectfully
declined).
We were
also on the
Apollo 13 rescue recovery mission (Pacific) as a back up
recovery
ship.
Even trained picking up a dummy capsule.
I missed
the Corsicana
reunion by one year. I only found out about them from reading the
Reunions section in the VFW magazine. By that time it had come
and
gone, which was a shame since I lived in Plano, TX, which is just on
the
other side of Dallas from Corsicana. Plus, Larry Pennington, one
of
the hosts, was
a
Machinist Mate in "M" Division whom I knew well.
Thank you
for all
of your hard work at putting the Kawishiwi into the age of cyber space.
Keep in
touch.
