George's Kawishiwi background: "I
was on the USS Hanson
DDR-832 out of San Diego.
I met the first class IC man while on a bus in Hawaii and asked if he
needed a striker ( I was a nondesignated FN at the time) in the shop.
Three months later I was out of the after engineroom and in the air
conditioned IC / firecontrol room. when the Hanson returned from the 69
- 70 wespac cruise I was sent to IC class A school at NTC San Diego.
Upon graduating I was ordered to the USS Kawishiwi in Pear Harbor. I
didn't want to go and actually went to see the CO on the Hanson asking
to be brought back 'home'. When I arrived on board the Kawishiwi I
was an IC-3 and passed the exam for IC-2 during my year on board.
Upon the end of my tour of service on board I was sent to shore duty at
Nuclear Weapons Training Group Pacific at North Island in San Diego
from there I was discharged Sept 15, 1973. My best guess is that I
arrived on board Special K Nov 1970 and left about one year later."
