Andy Bullions (68-72)
Engineering - inspected every tank and void of the Kawishiwi during the
1969 overhaul. During his time, the forward peak
tank was used to carry
fresh water. It was not uncommon to transfer fresh water to the DE's,
DD's, or MSO's from the forward peak via a 1-1/2 inch fire hose.
There
was no inner hull anywhere on the Neosho Class Oilers, as you can see
very well on frames 42-46 above. You could cut a hole in the bottom of
the ship by cutting through just one sheet of steel. The AO143's was
designed and built long before the idea of double hulled tankers were
conceived.
