by the their size, then no. Like 3in. No.1 is #31.
The 5 inch 38 Gun Mounts were removed around 1963. The Ammo handling area below became a storage area. Take a view of larger 5in. handling details. The 3 inch 50 Gun
Mounts sat high above the 01 deck, on top of their Ammo Rooms. View a

Mount.
The main magazine for
ammo was far below in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd levels and stored approx 7500
rounds. Passage to the magazines was via 32 ladders under the
Port #32 Ammo room. Bruce Wright, FTG2 (1970-75) of AO-145 can contest
to that, he had to take this route to take temperature tests in the
magazines. About (7) 3in rounds per step, of Ammo could be raised in
"frame 24s"
hoist at one time. The projectiles were carried to the Ammo
Room where several hundred rounds could be stored, the route taken is
unclear. Getting the rounds up to the Ammo lockers was a little tricky.

There were two holes
where a single round was passed up to the gun
mount, this hole was in two parts, that is, the gun mount had to be
turned in the one position the holes were lined up. The projectiles
were then stored in the local ammo lockers. View 3 in. system

Richard Inman, FT2 (1956-59) of AO-146 remembers that the chain hoist from magazines broke one time during a surface shoot and dropped (12) 5" projectiles right back into the magazine! Go to: Plans Page |
