Andy Bullions (68-72)
Engineering - The
smoke generator was removed during the 69 overhaul if I
remember
correctly. There was also a bathythermograph (BT) winch with a level
wind attachment and small stainless steel cable, back there that Jack
Hadsall can tell you a funny story about. This instrument, let out to
drop deep into the sea, records water temperature in relation to ocean
depth.
Pump Rooms, on the bottom of the ship, were huge. There were 56 steps
on the ladder from entrance to the pump rooms at the top of the cargo
deck to the bottom were the pumps were located. The turbines for the
pumps in the after pump room were located in the engine room and the
shafts went through the bulkhead to the pumps.
After
peak tank was
also used for fresh water storage, like the Bow peak tank.
