Comparing
the Six Super Tankers
..................................
The original plans for the
Neosho Class Fleet Oilers
displayed an elevation of command
structure as in image at right
.......
This structure permitted the flag to go no higher that the mast platform. The ships commission pennant would be attached at same point as the top of ensign.
A third column of flags on Port side of mast is where ships flag would be, but below the ensign.

The Neosho, Mississinewa, and Truckee
acquired Helicopter Pads.

Flags of USS Truckee AO-147 in Fall of 1962 when she was Flag Ship for Command Service Squadron Four.
The pennant was on Starboard column of flags.

The final configuration of the Hassayampa was this.

Notice the Bilge Keel at bottom of ship which ends aft to frame 75. This was a flange attached
to the hull
to help damp the rolling motion of the vessel. It is 190 feet long.

Here are photos of each at some time in their life. They are different.

Out Riggers

This is Mississinewa in James River

Only the Ponchatoula had an outrigger when she was commissioned. One, located at station #8.

From photos available, I would say four more were eventually added to Ponchatoula, at stations #3, #4, #6, and #7.

Neosho showed only two, at stations #6 and #8.

Mississinewa showed three, at stations #4, #6, and #8.

Hassayampa showed three, at stations
#4, #6, and #8.

Kawishiwi showed
only two, at stations #6 and #8.

Truckee showed five, at stations
#3, #4, #6, #7 and #8..
