from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific
Being the Gunner aboard PA91-15, a LCVP boat.

Louis joined the Navy at the age of 17 in Allentown Pennsylvania. His buddy joined too but stayed on the east coast during the whole war as a submariner. He went to boot camp at Sampson Naval Training Center on Lake Senenca, New York, then to Gunnery School in Bainbridge, Maryland. The big step was to boat school at Fort Pierce, Florida.

Louis has been a big help in finding old crew members and attends every reunion. the only member of his boat crew who still lives in his home town, is Shirley.

On September 30, 2003; Louis Helsel was visited by the nephew of an Adair Shipmate, Radioman 2C Linn E. Sheckler. This nephew is webmaster, Vern Bouwman of Bothell, WA. Louis lives about 10 miles east of Vern. Vern has created the Adair web site to honor his uncle who no lives in Traverse City, MI.
