On map sections 2,3 & 4 notice the Pootung area, along south shore. There were no roads then, just water ways. All home and shops were accessed via these water ways. See Stories about old Pootung.

Photo's left and right are examples of this, as seen today in an area West, located near Suzhou.

In the last two decades Pootung has changed, photo left, it is the most modern section of town, including Shanghai's new Airport.
