United States Naval Base, Finschhafen, New Guinea, was established 1944/02/01 Tuesday. The United States established a fairly large CW depot in Finschhafen, New Guinea in 1944.(1) Another possible CW storage location was near Bouganville. A CWS training center was established by the United States at Oro Bay in New Guinea during the war as well. It is not clear what happened to the CW munitions that had been stored in New Guinea during World War II when the hostilities ended. Allied forces captured Japanese CW munitions on the Admiralty Islands in 1943 and the Allies reportedly were attacked with gas by the Japanese on the Island of Attu.(2) Allied intelligence reports of the time do not specify the type of CW munitions captured or used in the attack. |
